Questions 3-6 are based on this text.
The vast Great Victoria Desert extends from the Eastem Goldfields area in Western Australia across the southern parts of central Australia to the Stuart and Gawler Ranges in South Australia. The climate is arid, with mean annual rainfall ranging from below 150 mm to over 250 mm. Rainfall is a seasonal, but shows great variability between years. The average of temperature in summer is between 32°C and 35 C.

Much of the Great Victoria Desert is vegetated by open woodlands, typically eucalypts (Eucalyptus gongylocarpa, E. pyriformis, and E. socialist) with a hummock grass understory (Triodia spp., largely T. basedownii), mulga (Acacia aneura) with other grasses (Aristida spp. and Plectrachne spp.), or belah (Casuarina cristata) with shrubs (Maireana sedifolia, Dodenaea attenuata).

The Great Victoria Desert has an exceptionally high diversity of reptiles, including the vulnerable great desert skink which had been considered extinct in South Australia until its rediscovery by
Aboriginal landholders in 1998. More than 100 species of reptile have been recorded, with Gekkonidae (e.g. Diplodactylus), Agamidae (e.g. Ctenophorus), Scincidae (e.g. Ctenotus, Egernia, Lerista and Morethia), and Elapidae (c.g. Simoselaps and Suta) being particularly diverse.

Several threatened mammals, the endangered sandhill dunnart (Sminthopsis psammophila), the endangered marsupial mole (Notoryctes typhlops), and the vulnerable mulgara (Dasycercus
cristicauda) still occur within the region., Australia has experienced nearly half of the world's mammal extinctions within the past 200 years, with most of the extinctions concentrated in drier interior regions of the continent. These extinctions include a number of species which once utilized the Great Victoria Desert: the pig-footed bandicoot (Chaeropus ecaudatus), short-tailed hopping mouse (Notomys amplus), long-tailed hopping mouse (N. longicaudatus), and lesser stick-nest rat (Leporillus apicalis).

Questions 30 to 32 refer to the following text
Monarch butterflies are known for the incredible mass migration that brings millions of them to California and Mexico each winter.

North American monarchs are the only butterflies that make such a massive journey-up to 3,000 miles. The insects must begin. this journey each fall ahead of cold weather, which will kill them if they tarry too long.

Monarch butterflies begin life as eggs and hatch as larvac that eat their eggshells and, subsequently, the milkweed plants on which they were placed. (Monarchs are dependent on milkweed plants,
which larvac cat nearly exclusively.)

Fattening larvae become juicy, colorful caterpillars, and then create a hard protective case around themselves as they enter the pupa stage. Thcy emerge as beautifully colored, black-orange-
and-white adults. The colorful pattern makes monarchs easy to identify-and that's the idea. The distinctive pattern warns predators that the insects are foul tasting and poisonous.

Butterflies that emerge from chrysalides (pupa state) in late summer and early fall are different from those that do so during the longer days and warmer weather of summer. The monarchs that emerge later are born to fly, and know because of the changing weather that they must prepare for their lengthy journey.

Only monarchs born in late summer or early fall make the migration, and they make only one round trip. By the time next year's winter migration begins, several summer generations will have lived and died and it will be last year's migrators' great grandchildren that make the trip. Yet somehow these newgenerations know the way, and follow the same routes their ancestors took-sometimes even returning to the same tree.

Questions 33 to 35 refer to the following text
Acer is a genus of trees or shrubs commonly known as maple, There are approximately 128 species, most of which are native to Asia, with a number also appearing in Europe, northern Africa, and North America. Only one species, Acer laurinum, extends to the Southern Hemisphere. The type species of the genus is the sycamore maple, Acer pseudoplatanus, the most common maple species in Europe.

Most maples are trees growing to 10-45 m (33-148 ft) height. Others are shrubs less than 10 metres tall with a number of small trunks originating at ground level. Most species are deciduous, and many are renowned for their autumn leaf colour, but a few in southern Asia and the Mediterranean region are evergreen. Most are shade-tolerant when young and are often riparian, understory, or pioneer species rather than climax over story trees with a few exceptions such as Sugar Maple. Many of the root systems are typically dense and fibrous, inhibiting the growth of other vegetation underneath them. A few species, notably Acer cappadocicum, frequently produce root sprouts, which can develop into clonal colonies.

The flowers are regular, pentamerous, and borne in racemes, corymbs, or umbels. They have four or five sepals, four or five petals about 1-6 mm long (absent in some species), four to ten stamens about 6- 10 mm long, and two pistils or a pistil with two styles. The ovary is superior and has two carpels, whose wings elongate the flowers, making it easy to tell which flowers are female. Maples flower in late winter or early spring, in most species with or just after the appearance of the leaves, but in
some before the trees leaf out.
